An engineer with headphones cleaning a vocal recording in the Harmonic Pro Studio Audio Editor

CORE TECHNOLOGY 05 · ADVANCED AUDIO EDITOR

Repair, retune and polish any recording.

Double-click an audio clip and it opens in the Audio Editor. Clean the noise, clicks and hum out of a take, heal a cough in the middle of a note, tune a vocal note by note and level it, then Apply. Until then, your recording is untouched.

THREE VIEWS

See your recording three ways.

Each view shows a different side of the same take. Select a range in any of them, right-click, and add a process right where it is needed.

WAVEFORM

The level of the take over time, both channels, on the song’s bars. Select a range by ear and by eye, and play just that part.

SPECTRUM

Every frequency over time. Hum, hiss, a chair creak or a cough show up as shapes you can see and draw around.

PITCH

Every sung note as a block with its real pitch curve, on a pitch grid in your song’s key, ready to move, straighten or shape.

REPAIR

Rescue the take you thought you’d lost.

Home recordings pick up the room, the fridge and the mains. The repair tools take the damage out and leave the performance in.

De-noise

Learns the noise floor of your recording, then lowers the hiss and the room underneath the voice or the instrument.

De-click

Takes out clicks, ticks, digital dropouts and the small pops an edit can leave behind.

De-hum

Removes mains hum at 50 or 60 Hz together with its harmonics, without thinning the sound.

De-clip

Rebuilds the tops of peaks that were flattened when the recording was too loud.

De-ess

Softens harsh “s” and “sh” sounds, only where they happen.

Spectral Patch

Draw around a sound in the spectrum and turn it down, or heal it: a cough over a held note disappears and the note carries on through.

ADVANCED PITCH EDITING

Every sung note, in your hands.

The Pitch view turns a sung line into notes you can see, hold and move. Fix a flat note, calm a wide vibrato, straighten a drifting line or reshape a phrase completely, one note at a time. Everything you leave alone stays exactly as it was sung.

The Harmonic Pro Studio Audio Editor's Pitch view: a vocal shown as notes with their pitch curves, the key and chords heard from the singing, and controls for pitch, modulation, drift, formant and gain

The key, heard

The key of the take, read from the singing, with how sure it is. The keyboard shows each note’s place in the key.

The chords, heard

A chord lane with the chords the melody points to, bar by bar, so you tune to the harmony and not just the scale.

Every note, named

A notes lane names each note and shows how many cents it sits above or below.

The pitch curve

The line the singer really sang: the slide into a note, the vibrato, the drift and the fall at the end.

NOTE BY NOTE

Change what needs changing. Nothing else.

Click a note and its own controls appear. Drag it, or type an exact value.

Pitch

Drag a note to the right pitch, or set it to the cent. The rest of the line does not move.

Timing

Move a note earlier or later, or make it longer or shorter, along the song’s bars.

Modulation

Keep the vibrato, calm it, flatten it or make it wider, from off to twice as deep.

Drift

Straighten a note that wanders slowly off its pitch, without touching its vibrato.

Formant

Keep the character of the voice when a note moves a long way, or shape it on purpose.

Gain and fades

Lift a quiet word or tame a loud one, and fade a note in or out, note by note.

MUSICAL AND NATURAL

Tuned to the song, and still the same singer.

The tools work the way singers and producers think about a melody, and a corrected note still sounds like a good take.

Snap to the key or the chords

Notes snap to every semitone, to the notes of the key, to the notes of the chord under them, or not at all.

Correct in one step

Centre every note on its pitch and even out the drift across a selection or the whole take, as strongly as you like.

Quantise, split and reset

Pull note starts towards the song’s grid, cut a long note in two, or reset any note to how it was sung.

Smooth or clean joins

Keep the glide between two notes, or make a clean step, and set how quickly one note turns into the next.

Breaths and “s” sounds left alone

Breaths and hissing consonants are kept out of the pitch processing, so they never sound robotic.

Untouched means untouched

Notes you did not edit stay exactly as recorded, bit for bit. A moved note keeps its level and lands to a twentieth of a cent.

LEVEL, TIME AND UTILITY

The everyday jobs, done properly.

The tools every editor needs, built with the same care as the repair tools.

Level ride

Evens out a performance, lifting the quiet words and easing the loud ones, before any compressor touches it.

Normalize

To a peak, an RMS level or a loudness in LUFS, with a ceiling so it never clips.

Align doubles

Lines a double-tracked vocal up with the lead, with one offset or following the drift of a human performance.

Polyphonic pitch shift

Moves a whole range up or down, chords and all, while the formants stay where they belong.

Gain, fades and polarity

Gain, fades with curves, polarity invert and DC offset removal, on any range.

Stereo utility

Mid/side encode and decode, swap left and right, or sum to mono.

NON-DESTRUCTIVE

Nothing is written until you Apply.

Every process you add is kept in a list beside the recording, on the range where you added it. Change it, move it, switch it off or remove it at any time. Your source file stays untouched.

  • Processed or original Switch between the two to hear exactly what your processes do.
  • Chains Save the list as a chain and load it on the next take.
  • Apply Writes a new file and points the clip at it, as one step you can undo in the song.
  • Peak and LUFS The level of the result, always in view.

Questions

Does it change my original recording?
No. Your processes are kept as a list you can change at any time, and the source file stays untouched. Apply writes a new file and points the clip at it, as one step you can undo.
How do I open it?
Double-click an audio clip in the timeline. The clip opens in the Audio Editor at once, ready to play.
Can it edit the notes of a chord or a guitar part?
Note-by-note pitch editing is made for one voice at a time: a vocal, a bass or a lead line. To move a whole recording with chords up or down, use the polyphonic pitch shift on a range.
Do I have to tell the pitch editor the key?
No. It hears the key and the chords in the singing itself and shows how sure it is. You can always pick the key yourself.
Can I turn a sung melody into MIDI?
Yes. Notes to MIDI turns the sung notes into a MIDI part in one step, ready for any instrument.
Can I reuse my settings on another recording?
Yes. Save your list of processes as a chain and load it on the next take.
Which editions include the Audio Editor?
The Audio Editor, with its restoration and pitch tools, comes with the Studio edition. For the first 60 days every edition has everything.

Write your next song with a band behind you.
