7.1 Lite effects
Five small, fast effects for everyday track work: Gate, Compressor, EQ, Reverb and Limiter.
The Lite effects are small effects with only the controls you need. They cost almost nothing while they’re switched off, add no delay to your track, and live in the Plugin Editor under the timeline, not on the mixer’s insert slots.
7.1.1 The Lite rack
Select a track and its Lite effects appear side by side in the Plugin Editor, in the order the sound passes through them.
- Add an effect: right-click the Plugin Editor and choose Add Lite Plugin, then Gate, Compressor, EQ, Reverb or Limiter. A new track starts with an empty rack.
- Change the order: drag an effect by the dots at the left of its title bar.
- Remove an effect: right-click an empty part of it (not a knob) and choose Remove (for example, Remove Gate). You are warned first if it has automation or changed settings, and its automation is removed with it.
- When a track has more effects than fit, the rack scrolls sideways.
The master track has no Lite rack.
7.1.2 Switching an effect on and off
Click the power button next to the effect’s name. When an effect is on, its controls light up in orange. When it is off:
- the sound passes through untouched;
- its controls are locked, so a stray click can’t change them. Switch it on to edit.
7.1.3 Knobs
| Do this | To |
|---|---|
| Drag up or down | Turn the knob |
| Hold Shift while dragging | Fine steps |
| Double-click | Back to its default |
| Right-click | Reset to default, type in a value, copy or paste the value, and create, edit or clear its automation |
Some effects also let you drag a line in their display, such as the Gate’s threshold.
- 7.1.1 Gate Silences the gaps between sounds: bleed between drum hits, noise and hum between phrases, a room that rings on too long.
- 7.1.2 Compressor Evens out the level of a track: tames loud peaks, brings up quiet detail and makes vocals, bass and drums sit steadily in the mix.
- 7.1.3 EQ A four-band EQ you shape by dragging points on a curve. Warm up the lows, clear out mud, bring forward presence and add air to any track.
- 7.1.4 Reverb Places a track in a space, from a small room to a large hall. Add depth to vocals, drums and instruments with size, decay and pre-delay.
- 7.1.5 Limiter Sets a hard ceiling that the track’s level never crosses. Catch stray peaks, stop clipping and make a track louder without it going over the top.
