1.3 Set up your audio
Choose your audio device and a buffer size that suits what you’re doing.
1.3.1 Choose your device
Open Settings and choose your audio device.
On Windows
- If your device has an ASIO driver, use it. It gives the lowest delay.
- If it doesn’t, use WASAPI, which comes with Windows.
On a Mac
- Every device uses Core Audio, which comes with macOS. Choose your interface, or the Mac’s built-in audio.
1.3.2 Buffer size
The buffer is how much audio the computer prepares at once.
| When you are | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Recording, or playing an instrument | A small buffer | You hear yourself with less delay. |
| Mixing a big song | A larger buffer | The computer has more time, so fewer clicks and drop-outs. |
If you hear clicks or crackles, make the buffer larger.
